Since the comedian's first entry into feature films, Adam Sandler has been paired up with some of the most gorgeous women Hollywood has to offer. The pairings are so ridiculous, in fact, that the coupling is almost a joke in and of itself while being completely unrealistic as well.
Sandler is a funny guy, for sure, but that hardly explains many of the casting decisions which constantly plague his work. Some of the mis-castings certainly take audience members out of the movie itself, hurting the overall appeal of the movie. This isn't to say that Sandler can only be cast opposite of marginal leading ladies, but more to merely point out the unbelievable pairings he often finds himself in.
Sandler's upcoming project, Just Go With It, is a movie which sets to pair Sandler with Brad Pitt's ex Jennifer Aniston and Tom Cruise's ex Nicole Kidman. His latest work, Grown Ups, hits theaters tomorrow.
Friday Five: Adam Sandler's Most Unrealistic Love Interests
Honorable Mention: Julie Bowen (Happy Gilmore)
Happy Gilmore was Julie Bowen's first feature length film and in it she stars as the girl who doesn't date golfers, Fortunately for Happy, he's a hockey player and not a golfer. Why Bowen would have any interest in a ultra-aggressive, incredibly violent hockey player turned golfer is anyone's guess. Maybe it was because he loved his grandmother so, so much. Bowen's career later hit a high note on the short lived and critic-proof television series Ed. While she's appeared in episodes of Lost, ER, and Weeds, her largest claim to fame is the highly successful freshman comedy Modern Family.
#5. Patricia Arquette (Little Nicky)
It doesn't matter how much work the makeup artist does to make the romantic lead of Little Nicky look like a total dork -- it's still Adam Sandler dating Patricia Arquette. Maybe it helps when you're the son of the devil. But what about when this particular offspring of Satan is hideous and speaks with a lisp due to an unfortunate shovel accident? It doesn't matter how much charm Nicky (Sandler) may have had, this pairing is completely absurd. Arquette has had an interesting career in the industry, and can most recently be seen as the star on the television series Medium, now in its seventh season.
#4. Marisa Tomei (Anger Management)
While Sandler may be known for his goofball comedy, on occasion he's also known to play the part fairly straight forward. And while Sandler failed to convince the audience that he was angry (especially compared to other angry roles like Happy Gilmore, Punch-Drunk Love), he also failed to convince any audience member that Marisa Tomei would ever take an interest in this low-key businessman with barrels of pent up aggression. Tomei was nominated for a Best Supporting Oscar for her role in 2001's In the Bedroom and won the award in 1992's My Cousin Vinnie. Sandler has never been nominated.
#3. Paz Vega (Spanglish)
We can put aside the fact that Sandler's John Clasky was married to Tea Leoni for, afterall, she was married to Jim Carrey. Clearly she has a thing for funnymen. However, in Spanglish, professional chef Clasky gets caught up in a romantic affair with Flor Moreno (Paz Vega). The pairing, while cute and fun, was completely off the wall. Vega, known best for her work on 7 vidas, a Spanish sitcom, hasn't done much since her pairing with Sandler.
#2. Kate Beckinsale (Click)
This should, arguably, be tied for #1 in terms of complete absurdity. Not only is Sandler's Michael Newman married to Kate Beckinsale, but the entire plot of the movie Click revolves around him not enjoying his married life and wanting to skip through the boring parts. The movie is essentially a remake of It's a Wonderful Life, with Sandler not content with the way things are going and wanting to make a change only to realize that, duh!, he was happy all along. Oddly enough, Beckinsale can also be seen in the straight-to-video Tiptoes, alongside #4 on this list, Patricia Arquette. Becksinsale is most infamous for her role in the first two Underworld films.
#1. Salma Hayek (Grown Ups)
In Grown Ups, Sandler achieves his most ridiculous onscreen couple yet, as his Lenny Feder is married to Roxanne Feder, played by Salma Hayek. While Salma has been an icon for fans since her early work in Desperado, most know her best from her role as the stripper-vampire Santanico Pandemonium in From Dusk Til Dawn. Salma has been working steady since her first theatrical debut and has most recently been involved with the television shows Ugly Betty and 30 Rock.
