Will Ferrell Serves Up the Funny Even in Small Doses

Will Ferrell is a comedy superstar who doesn't mind appearing in some of the most small, yet memorable movie roles imaginable.

While he became infamous off of his seven year stretch on Saturday Night Live, the comedian has a knack for popping up in rather unexpected places.  The actor has made several friends along his way to stardom, and as such often pops up in fellow comedians (and long time friends) movies.

And often it doesn't matter whether he's in a starring role or if he's just along for the ride, Ferrell will make you laugh until it hurts.  And then make you laugh some more.  The hilarious comedian has made dozens of visit to fellow comedian Jon Stewart's The Daily Show, and last year had a reoccurring role on Jody Hill's Eastbound and Down television series on HBO (Ferrell and Adam McKay bought the distribution rights to Hill's first movie, Foot Fist Way, and are largely responsible for Hill's success thereafter).

Ferrell stars alongside Mark Wahlberg in this weekends new release, The Other Guys.  The Other Guys is directed by Anchorman director Adam McKay and marks the fourth outing for the longtime friends.   The unlikely pair of Wahlberg and Ferrell play two New York City police detectives who, after tired of being looked down upon by the successful detectives, decide to up their game and show that they are just as good at their job as everyone else.  Except they're not.  The Other Guys opens in theaters August 6th, 2010.

Friday Five:  Best Will Ferrell Cameos

Ferrell in Boat Trip

Honorable Mention:  Boat Trip

For those that don't remember, Boat Trip is a comedy (and I use this term lightly) starring Cuba Gooding Jr and Horatio Sans as two best friends who unknowingly take a cruise meant for single, homosexual men.  It's supposed to be funny, but it isn't.  But what is hilarious is Will Ferrell popping up as Michael, the homosexual partner to Artie Lange's character and being responsible for the cruise mishap (and thus the plot).

Ferrell in Austin Powers The Spy Who Shagged Me

#5.  Mustafa

The Austin Powers trilogy is arguably the best set of movies to come for Saturday Night Live.  So with the instant success of the first one, it's easy to understand why several SNL alum popped up for cameos in the future sequels.  Enter Will Ferrell, in his hilarious small part as Mustafa, an assassin hired by Dr. Evil to kill Powers.  Mustafa hates to be asked the same question three times, and once Powers learns of the assassin's weakness, it becomes quite easy (yet exhausting) to get information.

Ferrell in Starsky and Hutch

#4.  Big Earl

When cops Starsky and Hutch arrive at prison to question Big Earl for their case, the audience was quite surprised to find that the potential criminal mastermind was none other than Will Ferrell.  Ferrell plays the small part perfectly in Starsky and Hutch, while somewhat sexually harassing Owen Wilson in exchange for information.  Thankfully, the audience is spared from seeing Earl's final, and hilarious, request.

Ferrell in Wedding Crashers

#3.  Chazz Reinhold

By the time Wedding Crashers hit theaters, Will Ferrell was a full blown superstar thanks to Anchorman.  Jeremy (Vince Vaughn) learned everything he knows about crashing weddings thanks to Chazz.  So when Jeremy decides to get married, John (Owen Wilson) turns to Chazz for help, only to learn that Chazz has moved on from weddings to funerals.  Deciding that Chazz might not be the best resource for advise, John moves on but not before giving the audience a taste at just how morally disturbing Chazz truly is.

Ferrell in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

#2.  Federal Wildlife Marshal Willenholly

Wildlife Marshall Willenholly is not the brightest federal wildlife marshal out there.  Fortunately for orangutan activists, Jay and Silent Bob, Willenholly is the marshal responsible for catching the ones behind the 'act of terrorism' committed at the testing laboratory in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.   Ferrell frequently pops up throughout the middle part of Strike Back, failing in his attempts to bring the law down on the two stoners.   Oddly enough, the character's name is a take on the names of the main characters from Land of the Lost (Marshall, Will, Holly), which was later remade into a feature film starring Ferrell.

Ferrell in The Goods

#1.  DJ McDermott

No one paid to see The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard in theaters, which is a shame because most people missed out on the most ridiculous Will Ferrell cameo.  Ever.  In the movie, Ferrell plays DJ McDermott (in a flashback), best friend to Don Ready (Jeremy Piven).  Ready can sell cars but he can't let himself commit to relationships, because the last time he paid more attention to women than work it cost McDermott his life.  McDermott, dressed up as Abe Lincoln, parachuted out of an airplane as a promotional gimmick for one of Ready's car sales.  Unfortunately, Ready had accidentally given McDermott his bag of sex toys instead of a parachute bag, resulting in McDermott falling to his death while being surrounded by free falling sexual gags.  Instant classic.
