Sony's big Playstation announcement came late last night and with it news that the company will begin releasing PS1 games for Android devices.
The games, referred to as 'certified,' will be available for either Android phones or Android tablets. The functionality will come via 'Playstation Suite,' which for now Sony is referring to as a 'mobile gaming suite' for Android. The idea is to allow Android devices to access games through an online distribution and then play them via the handheld.
Currently, Sony is looking to bring PS1 games and possibly PSN games to the service 'cloud.' This cloud will be accessible by any Android device as well as the just-announced NGP (or PSP2).
Sony has announced launch games for the service which include, Wild Arms, Cool Boarders 2, Rally Cross, Medievil, and Syphon Filter.
Admittedly, playing PS1 games on a portable gaming system like the NGP sounds really intriguing. However, playing them on my Droid Incredible seems a bit, well, unbelievable. Reports say that Android 2.3 will be required in order to run the games, but the logistics of how this will work seems a bit complex.
The idea may be a bit more clean cut for tablets, which feature a larger screen size as well as an easier way to hold the device for gaming.
More news is expected on the Playstation Suite soon and we'll update you as it comes in.
