This weekend, Tim Burton's journey down the rabbit hole was a lucrative one indeed, with his iteration of Lewis Carroll's classic Alice in Wonderland raking in an astounding 116.3 million dollars. The film shattered the record for largest March opening weekend box office, which was previously held by Zack Snyder's CG epic 300, with 70.8 million dollars. An all-star cast couldn't help Antoine Fuqua's Brooklyn's Finest compete against Alice and company -- the movie came in an extremely distant second place taking in an estimated 13.5 million dollars. Rounding out the top three was Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island, which brought in a commendable 13.3 million in its third week of release.
Hollywood executives must be rushing out to buy gold toilets this week as the top ten tallied a combined gross of roughly 182.5 million dollars, which far exceeds the same weekend last year, where the top ten, led again by Zack Snyder's flawed adaptation of Watchmen, grossed around 97.5 million.
