Obsession (2026) Review
Be careful what you wish for… because it might start wishing back.
In the dead of night, something ancient stirs. A twisted branch. A whispered promise. One snap — and your deepest desire becomes your living nightmare.
Obsession, the chilling new supernatural horror from Focus Features, sinks its claws deep into the darkest corners of longing and turns them into something unspeakable. From the very first frame, the film wraps around you like cold fingers on the back of your neck, slowly tightening until breathing feels like a luxury you no longer deserve.
A New Voice in Horror
At just 26, writer-director Curry Barker (a former YouTuber known for his sharp, darkly comedic sketches) emerges as one of the most exciting new talents in horror. This is his breakthrough feature, and it announces him with terrifying confidence. Barker doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares. Instead, he crafts a slow, psychological descent that feels personal, uncomfortable, and viciously clever — blending body horror, dark humor, and raw emotional cruelty in ways that linger long after the theater lights return.
The Terror Unfolds
Michael Johnston delivers a heartbreaking yet deeply unsettling performance as Bear, a quiet, hopeless romantic who breaks an ancient “One Wish Willow” in a desperate attempt to make his longtime crush Nikki (Inde Navarrette) love him. At first, it feels like a dream. Then the dream rots.

Navarrette is absolutely ferocious in a dual-natured role that swings from sweet and intoxicating to violently unhinged. Her performance is the film’s blackened heart — seductive, tragic, and monstrous all at once.
What begins as a twisted romantic fantasy gradually mutates into something far more grotesque. Desire becomes possession. Love becomes a cage lined with teeth. The final act descends into pure, nightmarish chaos that will have you gripping your armrest and questioning every crush you’ve ever had.

Final Verdict: 9/10
Obsession is one of the smartest, most disturbing horror films of 2026. It doesn’t just scare you — it makes you feel dirty for watching, like you’ve glimpsed something you were never meant to see.
If you enjoy horror that crawls under your skin and stays there (think Talk to Me meets Fatal Attraction with a supernatural curse), this one will haunt your thoughts for weeks.
You wished for this.
Now there’s no going back.
