Passenger (2026) Review: Chilling Road Trip Horror That Will Haunt You

Passenger

Rating: ★★★½ / 5

Some road trips should never begin.

Passenger is a taut, skin-crawling supernatural horror that turns the simple act of helping a stranger into a descent into pure dread. Directed by André Øvredal (Troll Hunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe), this film weaponizes isolation, paranoia, and the vast darkness of the American backroads.

The story follows a young couple, played by Jacob Scipio and Lou Llobell, living the van-life dream — until one rainy night they witness a brutal accident. Against their better judgment, they pick up a lone figure on the side of the road. What starts as a good deed quickly spirals into a relentless pursuit by something that refuses to stay dead.

From the moment “The Passenger” enters their van, the tension never lets up. The film masterfully plays with your nerves using long, quiet stretches of highway darkness broken by sudden, visceral bursts of terror. The sound design is exceptional — every creak of the van, every distant footstep, every distorted whisper will make you lean closer to the screen.

Two people in a dark scene lit by red light; the front person looks afraid while a second person behind screams and grips their shoulder.

What makes Passenger particularly effective is how it taps into a very real fear: there is no escape when you’re hundreds of miles from civilization. The demonic entity is both physically imposing and psychologically disturbing, turning the couple’s once-cozy van into a claustrophobic coffin on wheels.

Melissa Leo delivers a chilling supporting performance that adds even more layers of unease to an already nightmarish scenario.

The Verdict:
While it occasionally leans on familiar horror tropes, Passenger succeeds through raw atmosphere, strong performances, and a suffocating sense of inevitability. If you’re looking for a movie that will make you think twice about driving at night — or helping strangers — this one delivers the chills.

Would I recommend it?
Yes — especially for horror fans who enjoy slow-burn dread that explodes into chaos. Just don’t watch it alone on a dark road trip.
