The wizarding world is about to return to the screen in a whole new way.
HBO Harry Potter fans have a new trailer for the upcoming series. The trailer offers another look at the adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books. However, it remains faithful, while new footage and designs hint at HBO’s signature spin on the Wizarding World.
The series will follow HBO Harry Potter, an orphan who discovers on his 11th birthday he is a wizard.
Thereafter, he receives an invitation to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This invitation signals new magic, friendship, adventure, and a place he can finally call home.
The official synopsis reads:
“An orphan boy, mistreated by his relatives, discovers he’s a wizard. He receives a letter to attend Hogwarts School, where he finds friendship, magic, and adventure — finally discovering the home and love he was always meant to have.”
HBO’s Harry Potter Is Bringing a New Look to Hogwarts
The new trailer isn’t the only thing HBO has unveiled. The studio has also offered fans a closer look at Harry’s Hogwarts acceptance letter, along with new crests representing Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin.
Some of the changes are immediately noticeable.
Harry’s Hogwarts letter uses familiar wording written in green ink, similar to the 2001 movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. But the Hogwarts crest on the letter has been redesigned.
Instead of the traditional four-section design associated with the original films, HBO’s version features a cleaner emblem with the four house mascots surrounding the central Hogwarts symbol.
The individual house crests have also received a redesign. The new versions appear considerably simpler than the elaborate crests featured throughout the original Harry Potter movies, giving the upcoming series a visual identity of its own.
HBO’s series will begin with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, returning to the beginning of Harry’s journey into the wizarding world.
The first book introduces Harry as an 11-year-old who has spent his childhood living under the stairs at the Dursleys’ home. Everything changes when his Hogwarts letter arrives and he learns the truth about his parents, his magical abilities, and the world that exists beyond the Muggle world.
Unlike the movies, HBO Harry Potter’s television format gives the creators significantly more room to explore Rowling’s original material. Furthermore, that could mean additional characters, storylines, and moments from books that were shortened or left out of the films.
The new trailer appears to embrace the familiar elements that made the franchise a worldwide phenomenon while introducing a fresh visual style.
For longtime fans, the biggest question is whether those changes successfully complement the original story without losing the magic that made Harry Potter such a cultural phenomenon.
The new Harry Potter series is shaping up to be one of HBO’s biggest upcoming television events, and fans won’t have to wait much longer to return to Hogwarts.
