Meet the Transformers: Watch the Entire Season 1 of the Classic 1980s Cartoon Here

Autobots clash in a space battle, facing off with guns drawn and a large space station behind them.

The original Transformers animated series—better known to fans as Generation 1 or G1—premiered in 1984 and became one of the defining cartoons of the decade. Produced by Sunbow Productions and Marvel Productions (with animation largely handled by Toei Animation), the show was created to support Hasbro’s new toy line of transforming robots. It ran for 98 episodes across four seasons through 1987 and introduced the core mythology that has fueled the franchise ever since.

Brief Synopsis

On the metallic planet Cybertron, a brutal civil war has raged for millions of years between two factions of sentient robots: the heroic Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, and the tyrannical Decepticons, led by Megatron. With Cybertron’s energy reserves nearly depleted, Optimus Prime leads a group of Autobots on a mission to find new resources. The Decepticons pursue them, a space battle erupts, and both ships crash on prehistoric Earth. The robots lie dormant for four million years until a volcanic eruption in 1984 reactivates the Autobot ship’s computer, Teletraan I. The computer repairs the Transformers and reconfigures them with Earth-based alternate modes (cars, trucks, jets, weapons, and more) so they can blend in.

The Decepticons immediately begin plundering Earth’s energy sources—converting them into Energon cubes to fuel their war effort—while the Autobots, aided by human allies like Spike Witwicky and his father Sparkplug, fight to protect the planet. Season 1 (16 episodes, including the three-part pilot miniseries “More Than Meets the Eye”) is largely set on Earth, with occasional trips back to Cybertron. Episodes mix high-stakes action with the classic “Decepticon scheme of the week” formula, introducing fan-favorite groups like the Dinobots and featuring a loose storyline around the Decepticons’ Space Bridge technology that culminates in the three-part “The Ultimate Doom.”

The series is pure 1980s Saturday-morning entertainment: bold designs, memorable voice work (Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime and Frank Welker as Megatron), an iconic theme song, and the simple but enduring premise of “robots in disguise” battling for the fate of Earth.

Top 5 Autobots

These are the core heroic Autobots who dominate Season 1 and became franchise icons.

  1. Optimus Prime — The noble leader of the Autobots. He transforms into a Freightliner semi-truck cab and trailer. Brave, selfless, and wise, he is the moral center of the series and is voiced by Peter Cullen. His rallying cry of “Autobots, roll out!” remains one of the most recognizable lines in animation.
  2. Bumblebee — The small, yellow Autobot scout who transforms into a Volkswagen Beetle. Young, eager, and often paired with human friend Spike, he is the everyman hero kids related to most. Voiced by Dan Gilvezan.
  3. Jazz — The cool, stylish lieutenant who transforms into a Porsche 935. He loves Earth culture (especially music) and brings a laid-back, charismatic energy to the team. Voiced by Scatman Crothers.
  4. Ironhide — The tough, no-nonsense veteran warrior and security director. He transforms into a van (Nissan Vanette) and is always ready for a fight. Voiced by Peter Cullen in the early episodes.
  5. Ratchet — The Autobots’ chief medical officer who transforms into an ambulance. Inventive, gruff, and essential for repairing damaged teammates, he keeps the team in fighting shape. Voiced by Don Messick.

Top 5 Decepticons

These are the primary villains of Season 1—the power-hungry Decepticons who keep the conflict alive.

  1. Megatron — The ruthless leader of the Decepticons. He transforms into a Walther P38 pistol (with a fusion cannon in robot mode). Power-hungry, strategic, and intimidating, he is voiced by Frank Welker and is defined by his belief in “peace through tyranny.”
  2. Starscream — The ambitious air commander and second-in-command who transforms into an F-15 Eagle jet. Treacherous and constantly scheming to overthrow Megatron, he is one of the most memorable and entertaining antagonists in the series. Voiced by Chris Latta.
  3. Soundwave — The loyal communications officer who transforms into a cassette player. He is cold, efficient, and carries a team of cassette minions (including Laserbeak, Ravage, and Rumble). His monotone “Soundwave superior. Autobots inferior” lines are iconic. Voiced by Frank Welker.
  4. Skywarp — One of the Seeker jets (alongside Starscream and Thundercracker). He transforms into a jet and has the useful ability to teleport. A frequent participant in aerial assaults and Decepticon schemes.
  5. Shockwave — The cold, logical, one-eyed Decepticon left in charge of Cybertron while Megatron is on Earth. He transforms into a ray gun and represents the calculating, scientific side of the Decepticon threat. His appearances help expand the scope of the war beyond Earth.
