Comic-Con, arguably the largest pop culture convention in the world, officially began yesterday in San Diego, CA. What was once a nerds-only domain has branched into a coveted event catering to all pop culture fanatics. Over the last 40 years, Comic-Con and turned into a mainstream phenomenon. Every major comic book, movie studio, and TV station makes an appearance to market their latest projects.
So, it wasn't much surprise that yesterday’s line-up included an appearance by Angelina Jolie to promote her new spy thriller, Salt. The film, which opens today, has everyone talking about Jolie’s abnormal action movie success. "It's definitely unusual that a female has become an action star," Salt producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told The Hollywood Reporter. "But it's a funny thing. She's not a female action star; she's an action star. She's really the first female to transcend gender. I don't think it's occurred before."
Jolie’s appearance, along with other big name actors like Will Ferell and Jonah Hill, mark the convention’s rising power and appeal. The actress’ attendance had convention goers speculating whether or not Brad Pitt would make an appearance to promote his new animated film Megamind. He didn't.
Other notable films in the Comic-Con lineup include the Walt Disney Picture’s Tron Legacy, and the much anticipated Green Lantern.
