Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is the latest live-action Disney remake to hit theaters. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the same man behind Pirates of the Caribbean and this year’s Prince of Persia, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice has some big shoes to fill.
The Pirates trilogy brought us a new kind of Disney movie; the PG-13 rated adult action flick that had no resemblance to the kiddy Disney movies we enjoyed in the past. Prince of Persia kept consistent with this new Disney genre, but now The Sorcerer’s Apprentice appears to have a sort of identity crisis. It’s marketing points to a more action packed thriller than the average kid’s movie, but its meek PG rating leaves us wondering what we’ll get in the theater.
With Bruckheimer credits, a typically adult oriented cast (including Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel), and the whole live-action Disney remake thing going on, audiences may be expecting a lot more than they’re going to get. There’s not a whole lot that can be done in terms of action within PG rating standards, and virtually nothing that can live up to the action in Pirates or Prince of Persia.
So, what’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice going to be? A new member of the live-action adult friendly Disney remakes? Or another mediocre kids movie to get lost in the shuffle?
