Letters to Juliet is still in schedule.

Letters to Juliet hits theaters this Friday, which may be more of an accomplishment than you think. The film, starring Amanda Seyfried, was tied up in a lawsuit ending just over a week ago that could have postponed the film’s May release. Telling the story of an American girl replying to a letter at Juliet’s grave in Verona, Italy, Letters to Juliet offers a story of taking chances on love and happiness.

The story’s inspiration comes from the book and real life tale of the Club di Giuliett. The group has been writing letters back to the messages left at Juliet’s grave for over 100 years. Summit made a deal for the rights to take the book, entitled Celebrating Shakespeare's Greatest Heroine, the Magical City of Verona, and the Power of Love from the pages to the big screen. Apparently the club itself had a different idea, making their own deal with ErgoArts to take their story to the screen.

At the beginning of the year, after being threatened with legal action, Summit sued ErgoArts, demanding a declaration of the film’s legitimacy. Another company, claiming it had been sold the rights of the story by ErgoArts countersued. The third party also alleged that at least one of Summit’s producers saw a script for their version of the story, “Dear Juliet” before Summit’s film started shooting.

According to Summit, the situation has now "been resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the parties and the litigation between the parties dismissed," and moviegoers waiting for the sappy, dramatic love story don’t need to worry. Letters to Juliet hits theaters May 14th.
